A Portrait in Giving, Q&A with Donor

Updated: Apr 22

Q. What makes Habitat your favourite charity to support?

A. Years ago, when my late husband Tom and I were considering charities, we chose Habitat because it offers deserving families a hand up, not a handout. Families in the Habitat for Humanity program invest financially and through volunteering to help support the build of their homes. Supporting Habitat also allows us to designate funds for local investment, a concept important to both Tom and me. Through this approach, we've been able to make donations in memory of dear friends in other provinces, knowing the funds support housing builds there.

Q. What are some of the ways you have supported Habitat?

A. Over the years, we have budgeted to support Habitat for Humanity monthly. Although our budget is modest, Habitat has made the process easy for us, allowing consistent giving. When friends in other provinces have passed away, Habitat has been our go-to for memorial donations, confident in their use for getting families into affordable homes. When Tom passed away last year, we designated Habitat for Humanity as one of our memorial donation charities. I was pleased when friends and family honored Tom with Habitat donations.

Q. What's your favourite thing about spring? 🌼

A. My favourite part of Spring is the re-birth of nature. As an amateur photographer, I am daily on the look out for signs of new life. I am happy to find that in the return of the robins, the Spring blooms of the snowdrops, crocuses and currently, the daffodils. Before long, the tulips and irises will be bringing new colour to my daily walks and photographs.
